Winter is the best time to get away for a cozy relaxed vacation into the Alpine region near Melbourne, Victoria. This is the very period travel bugs come out to search for the best winter travel destinations to do a weekend or long weekend trip to nearby travel destinations in Victoria. Below is the list of the best places to visit during the Winter Period but mind you, it is quite a challenge to find nice accommodation – so plan well ahead!
Mount Buller
Undoubtedly the most popular and most packed alpine winter destination in Victoria is located about 250 km away from Melbourne city taking you approximately 3 hours of drive. The Summit and the ski runs are the main attraction.
Falls Creek
Our personal favourite and a fast-growing tourist destination in the winter period and is the second-largest winter destination with resorts and facilities to match the tourist crowd to this area. It is located about the same distance away from the city like the Mt. Hotham. (375 km).
Mount Hotham
Mt. Hotham is yet another popular place which is about 375 km away from Melbourne city and is one of the best winter destinations in Victoria you might want to visit after you have done Mount Buller.
Mount Baw Baw
The best part of Mt. Baw Baw is that it is not very far at all! The destination is located 160 km away from the city and is fast becoming a popular weekend destination from Melbourne city. The 2.5 hours drive takes you to this tourist alpine region which has limited accommodation facilities.
Mount Buffalo
Situated at 330 km away from Melbourne city, this alpine region has smaller ski areas and is another winter destination you might want to consider going to from Melbourne. This is a great option to consider for intermediate and beginner level skiers!
